Chandigarh Flyover Project Halted by High Court to Preserve Heritage Status

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued a significant ruling prohibiting the construction of a proposed flyover at Tribune Chowk in Chandigarh. This decision, delivered on Friday by a Division Bench composed of Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sanjiv Berry, aligns with the guidelines outlined in the city’s Master Plan-2031.

The ruling came in response to multiple petitions objecting to the flyover project due to environmental concerns. Previously, the Court had placed a temporary injunction preventing the Union Territory from cutting down trees in the area surrounding Tribune Chowk. In its latest judgment, the Court has reinforced this stance by permanently halting the flyover project and explicitly banning the removal of mango trees or any other trees in the vicinity.

Emphasizing the importance of Chandigarh’s green and heritage status, the Court directed the Union Territory Administration to preserve the unique character of the city. Specifically, this applies to Sectors 1-30, which includes the significant thoroughfare of Dakshan Marg, a crucial part of Phase I of the city’s development.

Additionally, the Court urged the administration to promote the city’s original ambiance by reducing reliance on private motor vehicles and fostering the use of public transportation. This directive aims to maintain the city’s environmental integrity and uphold its architectural legacy.

The full text of the judgment is anticipated for release, providing further details on the Court’s decision and future implications for urban development in Chandigarh.
