Soulful Conversations: Insights from Nish Shetty, Senior Partner at Clifford Chance

In the latest edition of “Soulful Conversations with Bithika Anand,” the spotlight is on Nish Shetty, a Senior Partner specializing in Litigation and Dispute Resolution at Clifford Chance, Singapore. With a career that has flourished over three decades, Shetty has become a prominent name in international arbitration, navigating complex cross-border disputes across Asia and Europe. He is also the founder and former Chairman of the SIAC Users’ Council and Co-Chair of the Council of Arbitration at the Mumbai Centre for International Arbitration. Notably, he was the first Asian appointed as a Judge of Appeal on the FIA International Court of Appeal in Paris.

Shetty’s foray into the legal world was somewhat serendipitous. “I call myself an accidental lawyer,” he shares, reflecting on how a family friend nudged him towards law without a clear path in mind. His initial experiences in practice were revelatory. “Doing my first case and really enjoying it… I realized this could be a fulfilling career.” Over thirty years later, Shetty’s enthusiasm for the profession remains undiminished. “I still enjoy coming to work,” he asserts, highlighting a career marked by enduring passion and commitment.

Influences from his early life, particularly observing entrepreneurial ventures including his father’s, instilled in him a crucial understanding of the commercial aspects of law. “Understanding commercial motivations is critical,” he emphasizes, noting that the role of a lawyer is about applying the law to deliver practical solutions in a commercial context.

Shetty also underscores the importance of balance, both professionally and personally. As a sports enthusiast, he engages in golf, tennis, skiing, and water sports to maintain his physical and mental well-being. His advice to aspiring lawyers is to maintain this balance: “Your health and mental well-being are as important as your career,” he advises, reminding them that legal success is the result of a marathon, not a sprint.

Reflecting on mentorship, Shetty fondly remembers late Alvin Yeo, who not only shaped his legal acumen but also his demeanor. “You can win just as well with a smile as with a frown,” he recalls, underscoring the value of composure and quiet confidence.

On a personal note, Shetty describes himself as deeply spiritual, finding solace and guidance in daily prayer and temple visits, which help shape his values and balance. His advice to young lawyers is to exercise patience in a world focused on instant results. “The law does not offer instant gratification but it offers deep, long-term fulfillment if you stay the course.” While he once dreamt of being a pilot, Shetty reflects that his legal career has been both impactful and rewarding.

The “Soulful Conversations” series offers a glimpse into the lives of legal professionals beyond their practice, delving into their personal journeys, values, and the beliefs that drive their achievements. Now in its second season, the series continues to feature distinguished personalities from the legal field, showcasing their diverse experiences and insights.
