Leadership Skills Beyond Legal Expertise: Insights from Cyril Shroff on IIMA Leadership Academy

Introduction to the Cyril Shroff-IIMA GC Leadership Academy

Cyril Shroff, the Managing Partner at Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, has embarked on a transformative journey to enhance leadership within the legal profession. In collaboration with the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA), Shroff has launched the Cyril Shroff – IIMA GC Leadership Academy. This initiative is not only a professional partnership but also a personal philanthropic endeavor by Shroff and his family, aimed at fortifying the in-house legal community by nurturing their leadership potential.

The Vision Behind the Academy

In an interview with Bar & Bench’s Pallavi Saluja, Shroff elaborated on his motivations and vision for the Academy. He expressed a desire to give back to the profession that had shaped his career. Recognizing that in-house legal professionals often lack attention compared to their counterparts, Shroff is committed to equipping General Counsels (GCs) with leadership skills that transcend traditional legal expertise. His goal is to develop GCs as enterprise leaders, trusted advisors, and guardians of governance.

The Timing and Strategic Importance

Addressing the timing of this initiative, Shroff acknowledged the importance of leaving a legacy. He emphasized that the Academy aligns with India’s evolving business landscape and the national agenda of Viksit Bharat (Developed India). Shroff believes that GCs are pivotal in advancing these goals. Although he admits the initiative might be overdue, he is optimistic about its timely relevance and potential impact.

Identifying Leadership Gaps Among GCs

Reflecting on the evolution of the GC’s role, Shroff noted that while legal skills are foundational, leadership capabilities often require more attention. GCs need to adeptly manage teams, boards, and CEOs, navigate technological advancements like Artificial Intelligence, and handle regulatory crises. These challenges demand resilience and strategic thinking, extending far beyond conventional legal training.

The Choice of IIM Ahmedabad

Explaining the decision to partner with IIMA, Shroff praised the institution’s esteemed reputation and innovative mindset. He highlighted IIMA’s commitment to original content creation and the case study method, which resonates with the Academy’s educational philosophy. Shroff is confident that IIMA’s legacy of producing prominent business leaders will translate into developing future lawyer-business leaders through this collaboration.

Academy Structure and Distinctive Approach

The Academy promises more than a traditional executive program. It will have a dedicated space within IIMA, staffed with research assistants, case writers, and academicians, to produce original content. The curriculum will feature multiple executive education courses annually, employing the case study method for impactful learning. Initial plans include residential courses spanning two to three days, with expansions to include advanced courses over time.

As the Academy prepares to address the challenges of the AI era, it aims to deliver new ideas and original content, ensuring that GCs receive comprehensive education that equips them for the complexities of modern business environments.
