Retired Justice Avanindra Kumar Singh Pledges ₹1.01 Crore to PM CARES Fund

Justice Avanindra Kumar Singh’s Generous Contribution

Justice Avanindra Kumar Singh of the Madhya Pradesh High Court marked his retirement with a remarkable gesture by pledging his entire General Provident Fund (GPF) savings, approximately ₹1.01 crore, to the Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations (PM CARES) Fund. This announcement was made during his farewell ceremony on September 17.

Commitment to Science and Society

In addition to this financial contribution, Justice Singh and his wife, Shivati Indra Singh, have also pledged to donate their bodies to a medical college for scientific research after their passing. This decision reflects their commitment to contributing to society even after their lifetimes.

Reflections on a Distinguished Career

During his farewell address, Justice Singh reflected on his 37-year tenure, acknowledging the significant influences and principles that guided him throughout his career. “After retirement today, I will begin a new chapter in my life, and I will always continue to work on a new platform,” he expressed, highlighting his ongoing dedication to service.

Motivation Behind the Donations

Explaining his decision to donate his retirement savings, Justice Singh stated, “As per office calculation, I will be receiving about 1 crore 1 lakh from my GPF account, which I pledge before you all to donate the entire amount as soon as I receive it for nation-building in the Prime Minister CARES fund. And this step is the beginning and not the end.” His decision to donate his body was similarly rooted in a desire to contribute to society.

Influences and Inspirations

Justice Singh credited his wife for suggesting both commitments, emphasizing her unwavering support and innovative ideas. He also shared personal anecdotes about his upbringing, having lost his mother at six months old and being raised by his maternal uncle and aunt. Their values, along with the guidance from senior judges, significantly influenced his judicial philosophy.

Advice and Legacy

Justice Singh recalled valuable advice from former district judge Justice NK Jain, who advised him, “A judge should not succumb to criticism. If there is any pressure on your pen, meaning that either you are angry with a party or have some sort of affection for a party, then don’t deal with the case.” He also highlighted the judiciary’s adaptation to virtual hearings and online services during the COVID-19 pandemic, which enhanced court accessibility.

Gratitude and Farewell

In his concluding remarks, Justice Singh expressed gratitude to fellow judges, lawyers, registry officials, judicial officers, and staff members for their support throughout his illustrious career.
