Tarunima Vijra Appointed as Managing Counsel at ArbBoutique

Tarunima Vijra has been appointed as Managing Counsel at ArbBoutique, marking a significant addition to the firm’s legal team. An esteemed legal professional, Vijra graduated in 2011 from the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences and furthered her expertise with an LLM in International Dispute Settlement from the Geneva Graduate Institute in 2017.

With a robust career spanning fifteen years in international arbitration and investment treaty disputes, Vijra’s credentials include admission to the Bar Council of New Delhi and registration with the Brussels Bar. Her comprehensive practice involves roles as counsel, tribunal secretary, and arbitrator in intricate cross-border legal proceedings.

Vijra’s extensive experience covers various institutional and ad hoc arbitrations under the auspices of bodies such as the ICC, LCIA, SIAC, SCC, ICSID, and UNCITRAL. Her sector expertise includes industries such as aviation, banking, energy, infrastructure, mining, and telecommunications.

Currently, she is advising the Republic of India in Dutch court proceedings related to setting aside and revocation efforts concerning investment awards from the Devas satellite dispute. Additionally, she played a critical role alongside Albert Jan van den Berg and Niuscha Bassiri in advising India during the annulment proceedings of the investment award in the case of Cairn Energy v. India.

Before joining ArbBoutique, Vijra was associated with Hanotiau & van den Berg, a notable name in the arbitration sector. In line with its strategic expansion, ArbBoutique is launching a new office in Hong Kong, complementing its existing locations in Berlin, Brussels, London, Paris, and Singapore. The firm’s partners, including Professor Dr. Maxi Scherer, Niuscha Bassiri, Chiann Bao, Emily Hay, and Dr. Ole Jensen, stated, “Hong Kong is a natural addition, in light of our strong connections to the region. With a second office in Asia, the expanded global footprint represents the international nature of ArbBoutique’s cases.”

In addition to Vijra’s appointment, ArbBoutique has welcomed Jean Chai as an Associate. Chai, qualified in Singapore, previously interned with the firm. Earlier this year, Ritika Ajitsaria joined ArbBoutique as an Associate after a six-month internship. Ajitsaria is a 2018 graduate of the National Law School of India University and earned her LLM in International Dispute Settlement from the CIDS Geneva Center for International Dispute Settlement in 2024.
