Centre Confirms Appointment of Eight Advocates as Judges in Calcutta High Court
The Central Government has officially announced the appointment of eight advocates to the esteemed position of additional judges at the Calcutta High Court. This development was revealed by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, who made the announcement via a post on the social media platform X.
The newly appointed judges include Aryak Dutt, Atarup Banerjee, Sandip Kumar De, Partha Pratim Roy, Sudip Deb, Anuj Singh, Arjun Ray Mukherjee, and Rishad Medora. These appointments come after the Supreme Court, in May, had recommended nine advocates for the positions. However, the government has chosen to approve eight of these recommendations.
Noticeably absent from the list is the name of advocate Indranil Roy. Roy’s recommendation was not included in the notification issued by the Centre today, leaving the reason for this exclusion unspecified at this time.
Currently, the Calcutta High Court operates with 41 judges, which is significantly below its sanctioned capacity of 72. The addition of these eight judges is expected to strengthen the court’s ability to manage its caseload effectively.
