A Delhi court has voiced its astonishment following revelations that the chargesheet in the NEET UG paper leak case, prepared by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), has been leaked to the media. It has been alleged that the names of witnesses, including minors, have been publicly disclosed. Special Judge Ajay Gupta of the fast-track court at Rouse Avenue emphasized the need for action to address this issue.
Concerns Over Media Leaks
During a session on Wednesday, Judge Gupta remarked on the situation, stating, “It’s a significant concern for me. Matters that are part of the chargesheet but have not been discussed remain under scrutiny. It’s shocking, and something needs to be done.” His remarks reflect the court’s dismay over the premature exposure of sensitive information that could influence the legal proceedings.
Responsibilities of Media and Stakeholders
The court underscored the responsibilities of all involved parties, including the media, to ensure the trial remains unbiased. Judge Gupta stressed, “The media has a responsibility. All stakeholders must ensure that the trial proceeds as prescribed by criminal law, without prejudice. I urge everyone involved to refrain from irresponsible reporting.” This statement came after the CBI prosecutor highlighted that the media had reported the names of witnesses, some of whom are minors, potentially compromising their safety and the integrity of the case.
Defendants’ Concerns
Defense counsel also raised concerns, suggesting that the media had accessed the chargesheet before it was officially filed in court, which could prejudice the defendants’ case. In response, the court indicated it would review the reports to determine necessary actions.
Details of the Chargesheet
The CBI has submitted a comprehensive chargesheet spanning nearly 20,000 pages, implicating 13 individuals in the NEET UG paper leak case. The chargesheet alleges that three subject experts illicitly obtained exam questions from the National Testing Agency (NTA) office in Delhi through various means. It was revealed in court that these accused individuals managed to leak the questions due to inadequate frisking procedures when exiting the confidential section.
