High Court’s Directive to MEITY and DoT
On Wednesday, the Delhi High Court issued a directive to the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to provide guidance on potentially de-registering Internet Service Providers (ISPs) that have failed to remove pornographic content exploiting Jaya Bachchan’s name. This decision came from Justice Jyoti Singh, who was apprised by Bachchan’s legal team that such content remains accessible, in spite of the Court’s prior ex parte order dated November 10, 2025, which instructed MEITY and DoT to block these specific webpages.
Non-compliance by ISPs
The court was informed that the ISPs have not adhered to the directive. Both MEITY and DoT reported that the ISPs were neglecting to implement the order. Justice Singh expressed concern over this non-compliance, remarking on the ISPs’ apparent disregard for court orders and government directions. She suggested that the possibility of de-registering these ISPs should be explored as a measure to enforce compliance.
Potential Consequences and Next Steps
Justice Singh emphasized the seriousness of the issue due to the nature of the content involved, noting, “It concerns me because it is pornographic content.” She indicated that de-registration of non-compliant ISPs could serve as a deterrent to others, stating, “If it happens in one case, then it will be a deterrent in others.” The Court has instructed MEITY and DoT to report back with further instructions on how to enforce the order against the defaulting ISPs.
