The Karnataka State Bar Council (KSBC) has come out in strong defense of Bar Council of India (BCI) Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra, firmly rejecting accusations made by YR Sadasiva Reddy, co-chairman of the BCI and former KSBC member. These allegations have been characterized by KSBC as baseless and politically motivated.
KSBC’s Response
In a press release dated August 24, 2023, Kamaraddi VD, the nominated Chairman of KSBC, expressed unwavering support for Manan Kumar Mishra, stating, “While the newly elected members of the KSBC await the formal takeover of office as per BCI guidelines, myself, as the administrator of the Karnataka State Bar Council, reiterates absolute faith and confidence in favor of Shri Manan Kumar Mishra leading the Bar Council of India.”
Background of the Allegations
YR Sadasiva Reddy called for Mishra’s resignation following a controversial BCI directive issued on August 13, which was subsequently withdrawn. This directive was intended to prevent NALSAR graduating students from enrolling as advocates, a decision that Reddy claims was made without proper deliberation or authorization by the Council.
KSBC’s Counterarguments
The KSBC highlighted that Reddy had served in the BCI for a decade without previously objecting to its operations. The Council criticized Reddy’s letter dated August 22 as an attempt to sow discord within the legal community, stating, “His sudden, opportunistic grievances—raised years after these decisions were executed—demonstrate a clear lack of bona fides.”
Decision to Remove Reddy
The KSBC further noted that it had removed Reddy with a two-thirds majority due to what they described as inefficiency and unsatisfactory performance. This removal occurred two years after Reddy was recommended as KSBC’s representative on the BCI. “It is ironic that an individual previously removed by his home State Bar Council for inefficiency now seeks to question the credentials of the BCI Chairman,” read the press release.

Reddy’s Current Standing
KSBC questioned Reddy’s authority to critique Mishra, pointing out that Reddy is no longer an elected member and suggesting that his actions are driven by a personal agenda. They praised Mishra’s leadership, emphasizing his efforts to protect the autonomy of the legal profession, enhance advocate welfare, upgrade digital infrastructure, and resolve institutional matters through democratic dialogue. They called upon advocates in Karnataka and across India to dismiss politically motivated distractions and support Mishra’s vision.
Manan Kumar Mishra’s Reaction
On August 22, Mishra dismissed Reddy’s calls for his resignation as a “political stunt.” He highlighted his previous defense of Reddy when the KSBC had passed a no-confidence motion against him.
