Abhishek Banerjee, a prominent Member of Parliament from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has approached the Supreme Court of India seeking intervention regarding the delayed action by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Banerjee’s appeal concerns the disqualification petitions he filed against 20 MPs who defected from TMC to join the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI).
The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the case on August 25. The bench will be comprised of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, alongside Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana, as they deliberate on the plea.
The controversy stems from a group of approximately 20 MPs who initially secured their positions under the TMC banner. In June, these MPs shifted allegiance to the NCPI, a lesser-known political entity, following internal conflicts with TMC leadership, including Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee. This political shift occurred shortly after TMC’s electoral defeat in the West Bengal assembly elections, which sparked significant unrest within the party ranks.
The issue at hand involves the Anti-Defection Law, which seeks to curb political defections by legislators. Abhishek Banerjee’s legal recourse aims to expedite the decision-making process regarding the potential disqualification of these defected MPs. The delay in addressing these disqualification petitions has been a point of contention, prompting Banerjee to seek judicial intervention to uphold the legislative integrity of TMC.
