The Bombay High Court has put forth a recommendation encouraging prominent dining establishments throughout Maharashtra to establish dedicated websites or social media platforms. This initiative aims to enable patrons to share their opinions on aspects such as hygiene, food quality, and taste.
During a hearing on a petition regarding the suspension of licenses for five eateries at the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), the bench, consisting of Acting Chief Justice Ravindra V. Ghuge and Justice Gautam A. Ankhad, proposed this innovative feedback mechanism. The case, titled Mumbai Cricket Association v. State of Maharashtra & Ors., saw the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) agree to lift the suspension of these licenses following the High Court’s intervention.
As the session concluded, the judges suggested introducing a public oversight system akin to those found in the tourism industry to benefit both society and the government department.
“We were contemplating an initiative beneficial to society and the department. Why shouldn’t major eateries, similar to those in western countries, have their own web pages?” Acting Chief Justice Ghuge remarked, clarifying that this suggestion is directed towards significant restaurants rather than smaller local food vendors.
He emphasized, “Let these major restaurants create their web pages, allowing citizens to share reviews on hygiene, food quality, and taste.” The court underscored the importance of a platform where patrons can voice their experiences.
Senior Advocate Venkatesh Dhond, representing the MCA, pointed out the increasing prevalence of social media. “Today, platforms like Instagram are more popular than traditional web pages. Often, if something isn’t available on a website, it’s likely found on these social media pages,” Dhond noted, highlighting the shift towards digital engagement.
In response, the bench encouraged the department to consider updating its regulations to incorporate public feedback mechanisms, reflecting the evolving digital landscape and consumer behavior.
