The Central government has officially approved the appointment of Justice Krushna Ram Mohapatra as the Chief Justice of the Chhattisgarh High Court. This significant judicial appointment was announced by Union Minister of State for Law, Arjun Ram Meghwal, on the social media platform X on Saturday night.

Government Endorsement and Constitutional Procedure

In accordance with the powers vested under the Indian Constitution, and following consultation with the Chief Justice of India, the President has sanctioned the appointment of Justice Mohapatra as the Chief Justice. This decision comes as a result of a recommendation made during a Collegium meeting on August 6, 2026, following the retirement of former Chief Justice Ramesh Sinha on September 4, 2026.

Justice Mohapatra brings a wealth of experience to his new role. Prior to this appointment, he served as a judge of the Orissa High Court, having been elevated to that position on April 17, 2015. His legal career is marked by significant roles such as Additional Standing Counsel for the State of Orissa and representation for the Orissa Public Service Commission.

Justice Mohapatra has also been an advocate for various prominent entities, including the Central Cooperative Banks Limited (Keonjhar), the National Institute of Open Schooling under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited, and Bank of Baroda. These roles have equipped him with extensive experience and expertise, which he now brings to his new position as Chief Justice.
