A New Era for Human Rights Education at SRM School of Law
On July 25, 2026, the SRM School of Law in Kattankulathur marked a significant milestone with the inauguration of the Centre for Human Rights Studies. The event was graced by Justice V Ramasubramanian, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), who launched this pivotal center during the institution’s Induction Programme 2026. This ceremony not only welcomed a new cohort of students but also united distinguished legal experts, faculty, parents, and aspiring legal professionals.
Launch of Additional Legal Initiatives
In addition to the Centre for Human Rights Studies, Justice Ramasubramanian also unveiled the Centre for International Humanitarian Law and Refugee Law. His keynote address emphasized the importance of integrity, resilience, and a commitment to continuous learning in the legal profession. He shared personal insights as a first-generation lawyer, underscoring the importance of hard work and perseverance in transforming one’s professional journey.
The Role of Lawyers in Society
Justice Ramasubramanian highlighted the crucial role lawyers play in society, using logic and legal expertise to address complex human conflicts and uphold justice. He articulated that while legal knowledge can be imparted, qualities such as ethical conduct, compassion, and analytical thinking are what distinguish extraordinary lawyers. He encouraged students to embrace every educational opportunity and to recognize that legal education extends beyond the classroom into broader societal contexts.
Insights from Legal Luminaries
Additional Solicitor General of India, ARL Sundaresan, spoke on the responsibilities inherent in the legal profession, stressing the importance of discipline, integrity, and professionalism. He urged students to build careers on a foundation of ethical values. Meanwhile, Prof. YSR Murthy, Pro Vice Chancellor (Law) at SRMIST, welcomed the new students, reiterating the institution’s mission to cultivate future judges, advocates, corporate leaders, and legal scholars through a multidisciplinary and practice-oriented approach to legal education.
Encouragement for Aspiring Lawyers
Vivek Sriram, a Partner at Khaitan & Co, Chennai, inspired students to approach their legal studies with curiosity and resilience. He advised them to explore diverse career avenues, make the most of internship opportunities, and hone their communication and writing skills. He also encouraged students to identify their interests with patience and to develop professionalism, adaptability, and meaningful professional relationships.

This year, the SRM School of Law welcomed approximately 350 new students across its B.A.LL.B. (Hons.), B.Com.LL.B. (Hons.), B.B.A.LL.B. (Hons.), and LL.B. (Hons.) programs, as well as its LL.M. program, which offers specializations in Corporate Law, Cyber Law and Security, Criminal Law and Criminal Justice, and International Trade Law and Intellectual Property Rights.
