The Hidayatullah National Law University (HNLU) in Nava Raipur recently conducted a significant initiative to combat ragging by observing an Anti-Ragging Week from August 12 to 18, 2026. This event was a collaborative effort between the Pro Bono Club and the Anti-Ragging Committee, aimed at fostering a safe and respectful campus culture.
Engaging Activities to Raise Awareness
A variety of activities were organized to engage students and promote awareness. The week commenced with an inaugural orientation session, followed by a debate competition, a skit during the Independence Day celebrations, and both poster-making and reel-making competitions. Additionally, a documentary screening and a workshop on anti-ragging laws and institutional safeguards were held. These events were carefully coordinated by faculty members to ensure active student participation and meaningful engagement.
Promoting Values of Empathy and Respect
The initiative was designed to encourage students to not only adhere to anti-ragging regulations but also to embrace values such as empathy, mutual respect, and responsible citizenship. The programming underscored the legal consequences of ragging and emphasized the moral responsibility to protect the dignity and well-being of all community members.
Participation was encouraged across the board, involving students, faculty, and staff, as the university reaffirmed its strict zero-tolerance stance on ragging, in line with University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines.
Leadership and Coordination
The Anti-Ragging Week was spearheaded by the Anti-Ragging Committee under the leadership of Dr. Avinash Samal, Dean of Student Welfare, and the Pro Bono Club led by Dr. Parvesh Kumar Rajput. Student volunteers, including Swastik Yadav, Harshita Bhandari, Ashtik, and Disha, played integral roles in the success of the campaign.

Commitment to a Safe Learning Environment
According to a university press release, HNLU is committed to ensuring that every student can pursue higher education in an environment devoid of fear, intimidation, and discrimination. The university emphasized that ragging diminishes individual dignity, fosters fear, and can leave enduring emotional scars.
Ragging contradicts the core values of equality, fraternity, and human dignity that are vital to a civilized society. It perpetuates a harmful cycle where victims may become future perpetrators, thus normalizing abuse and reinforcing unhealthy power dynamics. The idea that seniority entitles individuals to mistreat newcomers is outdated and has no place in today’s educational institutions. Such actions are neither traditional nor benign; they are a violation of human dignity and legal principles.
For law students, the responsibility is even greater. As prospective advocates, judges, and policymakers, they are expected to uphold constitutional morality and the rule of law. Participating in ragging is fundamentally at odds with the ideals of legal education and the justice system.
