The Supreme Court Collegium has put forward the name of Justice V Kameswar Rao, currently serving as a judge at the Delhi High Court, to assume the role of Chief Justice at the Patna High Court. This proposal follows the interim leadership of Justice Sudhir Singh, who presently holds the position of Acting Chief Justice at Patna High Court.
The Collegium meeting, chaired by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, reached this decision on August 6. Justice Rao boasts an extensive legal background, having completed his LLB from Delhi University in 1990, and subsequently enrolling as an Advocate in March 1991. His legal practice spans the Supreme Court of India, Delhi High Court, and the Central Administrative Tribunal (Principal Bench) in New Delhi. Additionally, Justice Rao has made appearances in several other High Courts, including the Madras High Court and Port Blair, which serves as a Circuit Bench of the Calcutta High Court.
Justice Rao’s professional journey includes significant roles such as being a Member Executive of the Central Administrative Tribunal Bar Association at its Principal Bench in New Delhi. His judicial career saw a significant milestone when he was appointed as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in April 2013, later attaining the status of a permanent judge in March 2015.
In 2024, Justice Rao was transferred to the Karnataka High Court, where he also held the position of Acting Chief Justice in May 2025. He returned to the Delhi High Court on July 21, 2025. Presently, Patna High Court operates with 43 judges, while its sanctioned strength is 53, highlighting the need for a permanent Chief Justice to manage its full capacity effectively.
