About Project 39A
Project 39A stands as a distinguished center at NLU Delhi, dedicated to promoting equal justice and opportunity, as underscored by Article 39-A of the Indian Constitution. The project is instrumental in executing groundbreaking empirical research on pivotal issues within the criminal justice system. It addresses significant areas such as legal aid, torture, forensic science, mental health in prisons, and capital punishment, all geared towards fostering evidence-based legal policy and systemic reform.
Internship Program Details
Interns at Project 39A will engage in various critical areas, including:
- Death Penalty – Focused litigation and research initiatives.
- Forensic Science – Emphasis on DNA forensic techniques.
- Legal Aid – Working within the criminal justice system.
- Mental Health & Criminal Justice.
- Torture – Research and advocacy.
The internship involves both research (including fieldwork and empirical analysis) and pro bono legal representation, particularly for individuals on death row.
Eligibility Criteria
The program is open to students enrolled in recognized undergraduate or postgraduate courses in:
- Law
- Humanities & Social Sciences
- Management
- Media & Communications
- Other disciplines (considered on a case-by-case basis)
Students from both India and international institutions are encouraged to apply.
Internship Duration and Mode
Internships are available as full-time (4 to 12 weeks) or part-time (minimum 12-week commitment) engagements. Interns will be required to work on-site at Project 39A’s offices, located on the NLU Delhi campus in Dwarka, New Delhi. Candidates must specify their preferred dates in their application.
Please note that the internship is unpaid, and participants will need to cover their own accommodation, travel, and living expenses. Preference is given to those committing to at least six weeks.
Intern Responsibilities
Interns will undertake a variety of tasks, including:
- Assisting with litigation efforts.
- Participating in research projects.
- Supporting public outreach and social media initiatives.
- Administrative responsibilities.
While attempts are made to align duties with interns’ interests, Project 39A reserves the right to assign tasks as necessary. Interns must adhere to the working hours and operate from the specified office location.
Selection Process
Only candidates who are shortlisted will be contacted, and this notification will occur at least six weeks before the proposed start date of their internship.
