The SRM School of Law, part of SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), has significantly enhanced its academic prowess by welcoming 35 new faculty members. This strategic move increases the faculty count to 75 and underscores the institution’s commitment to academic excellence, research innovation, and global outreach.
The newly appointed faculty members boast impressive credentials, having studied or taught at renowned international institutions such as the University of California Berkeley Law School, King’s College London, Queen’s University Belfast, University of Göttingen in Germany, University of Amsterdam, Geneva Graduate Institute, McGill University in Canada, and the National University of Singapore. Remarkably, 51% of these faculty members have international degrees or substantial global academic and professional experience.
Among the new recruits, 13 have previously been associated with Jindal Global Law School, which is ranked among the top 35 globally according to QS rankings. The faculty expansion also includes highly qualified professionals from India’s prestigious institutions like the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) Bengaluru, NALSAR University of Law Hyderabad, National Law University Delhi, West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) Kolkata, and IIT Kharagpur.
The faculty brings diverse professional experiences as well. Notable appointments include Prof. Anuradha Saibaba, who has worked with the International Committee of the Red Cross and Médecins Sans Frontières, and Dr. Satanik Pal, a sociology expert with a Ph.D. from the National University of Singapore. Prof. Annamma Samuel, who formerly held the DPIIT Chair Professorship at National Law University Gandhinagar, adds to the distinguished roster.
This expansion notably increases female representation, with women now constituting 63% of the faculty, and represents a wide geographical diversity within India.
Dr. P Sathyanarayanan, Pro-Chancellor (Academics) at SRMIST, expressed the institution’s vision, stating, “Our Founder Chancellor, Dr. T.R. Paarivendhar, envisions the SRM School of Law as a crucible for cultivating individuals who can ascend to roles such as Supreme Court Judge or High Court Judge, or excel in the broader legal arena. Our dedication is to develop a world-class global law school synonymous with academic excellence.”
Prof. YSR Murthy, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the School of Law, emphasized the role of the new faculty in fulfilling the school’s international aspirations. “We aim to establish an eminent global law school, and our faculty are pivotal in this pursuit. We are thrilled to have attracted top-tier academic talent both nationally and internationally. They will inspire our students and forge national and international partnerships that will enhance our institution,” he remarked.
Dean of the School, Prof. Indranath Gupta, highlighted the school’s mission to cultivate future leaders in the legal domain. “Our goal at SRM School of Law is to produce leaders who will shape the legal profession and contribute significantly to society. Our faculty will be instrumental in nurturing the next generation of legal professionals,” he emphasized.
