Advocating for Transparency and Accountability
Justice Ujjal Bhuyan has emerged as a vocal advocate for transparency within the judiciary. Recently, he criticized the lack of detailed reasoning in the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendations for judicial appointments, stating that this opacity undermines public trust and allows for unsuitable candidates to ascend to the bench. During an event, he questioned, “I have noticed that the last three collegium resolutions contain no reasons whatsoever. Is this a step back from the principle of transparency?”
Justice Bhuyan cited a former Allahabad High Court judge’s controversial speech at a VHP event in 2024 as an example of the dangers posed by the lack of transparency. He highlighted the need for informed public debate on judicial appointments to prevent individuals with unconstitutional views from entering the judiciary.

At the Justice GP Singh 4th Memorial Lecture, Justice Bhuyan addressed the shrinking space for divergent opinions in India, noting that students peacefully protesting are often arrested and denied bail. A Distinguished Legal Career
Born on August 2, 1964, in Guwahati, Justice Bhuyan has had an illustrious career. After obtaining his LL.B. and LL.M. degrees, he practiced law primarily at the Gauhati High Court. His judicial career began in 2011 when he was appointed as an additional judge and later as a permanent judge of the Gauhati High Court. His subsequent transfer to the Bombay High Court was met with opposition, but he continued to excel, eventually becoming the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court in 2022 before his elevation to the Supreme Court in 2023.

Justice Bhuyan has presided over several significant cases, including granting relief to Republic TV’s Arnab Goswami and ruling on reproductive rights and acid attack victim compensation.
