The Karnataka government has initiated a significant move by forming a six-member cabinet sub-committee tasked with reviewing ongoing criminal cases to determine potential candidates for withdrawal. This strategic initiative is spearheaded by the State Home Minister Priyank Kharge, who will lead the committee composed of several key ministers. These include Health Minister UT Khader, Social Welfare Minister KH Muniyappa, Municipal Administration Minister HC Balakrishna, Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, and Urban Development Department Minister Yathindra Siddaramaiah.
According to an official statement from the Home Minister’s office, the newly formed committee will delve into each case’s specifics, scrutinizing the nature, background, and other pertinent factors before arriving at any recommendations. The government has emphasized that these recommendations should strictly adhere to the established rules for withdrawing criminal cases.
The Home Department is set to provide essential support to the cabinet sub-committee, guided by Rule 13(5) of the Karnataka Government (Transaction of Business) Rules, 1977. Significant guidance will also stem from a departmental circular dated March 15, 2025. Moreover, various departments have been instructed to extend necessary assistance to ensure the committee’s functions are executed smoothly.
Once the committee completes its review and formulates its recommendations, these will be submitted to the government for further consideration. The process will follow the pertinent legal and administrative protocols, ensuring that the decision-making aligns with the overarching legislative framework. This proactive approach underscores Karnataka’s commitment to fair and efficient judicial processes.
