The Central Government has officially approved the appointment of Justice Alpesh Yeshvant Kogje of the Gujarat High Court as the new Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. This significant development was announced by the Union Minister of State for Law, Arjun Ram Meghwal, through a post on the social media platform X, late Saturday night.
The appointment follows a recommendation made by the Supreme Court Collegium during its meeting on August 31. Justice Kogje, a distinguished member of the judiciary, has been serving as a judge at the Gujarat High Court. His legal journey began with earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in 1990, followed by a law degree from the Faculty of Law at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in 1993. He commenced his legal practice the same year.
Throughout his career, Justice Kogje has held several pivotal positions. From 2002 to 2007, he served as an Additional Public Prosecutor and was the Standing Counsel for the Central Excise and Customs Department. Notably, he was the Special Public Prosecutor for the Special Investigation Team (SIT) tasked with handling cases related to the infamous 2002 Godhra riots. His contributions in these roles have been significant, showcasing his expertise and commitment to the legal field.
Justice Kogje was elevated to the position of an additional judge of the Gujarat High Court in April 2016 and was confirmed as a permanent judge in March 2018. His impending role as the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court comes at a crucial time, as the court currently operates with 38 judges, while its sanctioned capacity is 53.
