The Central government has officially appointed Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. This decision, announced on Saturday, marks a significant milestone in Justice Mishra’s judicial career as he ascends from his current role as the Acting Chief Justice of the same court.
The prestigious Supreme Court Collegium had put forth Justice Mishra’s name for this esteemed position on August 6, endorsing his capabilities to lead the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Before this appointment, Justice Mishra had an illustrious tenure at the Allahabad High Court, where he began his judicial journey.
Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra embarked on his legal career with an LL.B. degree from the Campus Law Centre at Delhi University, a foundation that paved the way for his subsequent achievements. His judicial career commenced with his appointment as an additional judge of the Allahabad High Court on February 3, 2014. Notably, he was elevated to the position of a permanent judge on February 1, 2016, reflecting his dedication and proficiency in the judicial domain.
His tenure at the Allahabad High Court continued until July 20, 2025, after which he transitioned to the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Upon his transfer, he assumed office at the latter court on July 21, 2025. His leadership capabilities were recognized early on, as he took on the role of Acting Chief Justice on June 1, following the promotion of the former Chief Justice, Sheel Nagu, to the Supreme Court.
