In a groundbreaking legal proceeding, the world’s first artificial intelligence-powered law firm, Garfield AI, has triumphed in a trial against traditional human lawyers in the United Kingdom. The landmark case, decided by the Wandsworth County Court in London, revolved around a £7,000 unpaid fees dispute involving freelance HR consultant Tamires Camal Taquidir and a hospitality business.
Taquidir, who sought legal redress with the assistance of Garfield AI, emerged victorious in her claim. The AI law firm is notable for being the first of its kind to receive authorization and regulation by the Solicitors Regulation Authority in the UK. The founder of Garfield AI, Philips Young, shared this groundbreaking achievement on LinkedIn, underscoring the AI firm’s capabilities.
Young stated, “Garfield AI has won its first trial, and against a firm of human solicitors who instructed Counsel. It wasn’t a simple small claim trial either – not a one-hour hearing followed by an ex tempore judgment but rather a three-hour trial with numerous witnesses, extensive cross-examination, and then a reserved judgment. Garfield’s user not only won her claim but defeated the defendant’s counterclaim. This is the first trial ever won by an AI lawyer against human opposition, anywhere, ever. It’s the dawn of a new age of access to justice.”
Garfield AI was instrumental in managing several pre-trial tasks, including drafting pre-action correspondence, filing court proceedings, organizing disclosure, preparing four witness statements, and assembling trial bundles. Conversely, the defendant relied on a conventional law firm and even filed a counterclaim against Taquidir, which was also expertly handled by Garfield AI.
Despite the AI’s extensive involvement, the hearing required a human presence. Prior to the trial, Garfield AI enlisted junior barrister Dominic Li from One Essex Court to represent Taquidir, make verbal arguments, and conduct cross-examinations. The court ultimately ruled in Taquidir’s favor, awarding her the full £7,000 and dismissing the counterclaim.
Garfield AI reports having processed over 600 claims, aiding in the recovery of nearly £500,000 for clients, with most cases settling before reaching trial. The decision by the Wandsworth County Court signifies the first instance where Garfield AI’s automated litigation framework was rigorously tested against a defendant represented by traditional legal counsel in a contested trial.
