Calcutta High Court Requests Police Report on Pending Criminal Cases Against TMC's Sabyasachi Dutta

The Calcutta High Court has issued a directive to local law enforcement to submit a comprehensive report detailing any ongoing criminal cases involving Sabyasachi Dutta, a prominent leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). This order, handed down on Monday by Justice Saugata Bhattacharya, specifically requests information on any criminal proceedings beyond the already known extortion case filed on June 9.

Background of the Extortion Case

Sabyasachi Dutta is currently detained in connection with allegations that he coerced a businessman into paying him ₹1 crore in 2018. This extortion charge, registered by the Bidhannagar North Police, led to Dutta’s arrest on the same day the case was filed. The ongoing legal matter prompted Dutta to appeal for the quashing of the extortion charges in court.

During the court proceedings, Dutta’s legal representative, Senior Advocate Sandipan Ganguly, highlighted concerns about additional criminal charges possibly being levied against Dutta. It was revealed that subsequent to the initial filing of his petition, Dutta had been implicated in another criminal case where he had not been previously named as an accused. This development raised alarms about the potential existence of further undisclosed charges.

The court was urged by Dutta’s counsel to require police transparency about any pending cases against him. Advocate Ganguly emphasized the necessity of this disclosure, citing the need for Dutta to seek anticipatory bail to avoid further embarrassment while in state custody. “Let them disclose what are the cases against me,” Ganguly urged. “I can pray for anticipatory bail if I’m not arrested in that case. Let me not be subjected to further humiliation while I am in custody of the State.”

The Calcutta High Court has scheduled the next hearing for July 13. By this date, the police are expected to present their report on the criminal cases pending against Dutta, providing clarity on the extent of his legal challenges.
