Introduction to Project Eklavya
The Confederation of Alumni for National Law Universities (CAN) Foundation has unveiled the seventh edition of Project Eklavya, a significant initiative aimed at supporting underprivileged students enrolled in National Law Universities (NLUs). This project is designed to provide financial assistance through annual scholarships, ensuring that talented yet economically disadvantaged law students can continue their education without financial constraints.
Scholarship Details and Impact
For the 2024-25 academic year, Project Eklavya has granted scholarships totaling approximately ₹46 lakh to 48 deserving scholars from 18 different NLUs across India. Since its inception in 2019, the Foundation has disbursed nearly ₹3 crore in scholarships, extending its reach to students from 21 NLUs over a span of seven years. This initiative underscores the Foundation’s commitment to fostering education and breaking down financial barriers for aspiring legal professionals.
Selection Process and Committee
Project Eklavya employs a rigorous two-tier selection process. Initially, a panel of legal experts with no less than 10 years of experience at the Bar reviews applications to shortlist candidates who meet the eligibility criteria. Subsequently, a selection committee evaluates these candidates based on financial need and academic excellence to make the final selection. The 2024 edition’s selection committee was chaired by former Supreme Court Justice Indu Malhotra. For the 2026 edition, the committee will also be led by a former Supreme Court judge, as confirmed by the Foundation.
Chairman’s Vision and Acknowledgments
Sriram Parakkat, Chairman of the CAN Foundation, expressed his appreciation for the continued success of Project Eklavya. He highlighted the milestone of disbursing approximately ₹3 crores over seven years, made possible by the generosity of donors from the legal community, including judges and law firm partners. Parakkat emphasized the Foundation’s unwavering mission to recognize and support talented students, ensuring they have the opportunity to excel in their legal careers. He reaffirmed the Foundation’s determination to expand its reach and continue nurturing future leaders of the legal profession.
Eligibility Criteria for 2026-27
To be eligible for Project Eklavya 2026-27, applicants must satisfy the following criteria:

- Enrollment in an undergraduate degree program at any NLU.
- Currently in the second year or higher of their studies.
- A minimum of 70% aggregate marks in the last three semesters, or last two semesters for second-year students.
- At least 75% attendance in the last three semesters, or last two semesters for second-year students.
- An annual family income not exceeding ₹8 lakh, including the current financial year.
