Chief Justice Ramesh Sinha Concludes Judicial Tenure
On Thursday, Chief Justice Ramesh Sinha concluded his distinguished tenure at the Chhattisgarh High Court, celebrating a nearly 15-year-long judicial career. In a heartfelt farewell reference organized by the court, Chief Justice Sinha offered reflections on his time in office, emphasizing the importance of strengthening judicial institutions for future generations.
Reflections on a Temporary Office and Lasting Institutions
During his farewell address, Chief Justice Sinha underscored the transient nature of judicial appointments, noting, “The office we hold is temporary, and the individuals who occupy them are transient, but institutions must endure.” He highlighted the duty of judicial officeholders to leave behind a robust institution characterized by trust and a promising future.
A Distinguished Legal Career
Born on September 5, 1964, Chief Justice Sinha began his legal career by enrolling as an advocate in September 1990, practicing at the Allahabad High Court. His elevation to an additional judge of the High Court occurred in November 2011, and he achieved permanent judge status by August 2013. Before his appointment as Chief Justice of the Chhattisgarh High Court on March 29, 2023, he served at the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court.
The Role of a Chief Justice
Chief Justice Sinha elaborated on the multifaceted role of a Chief Justice, which extends beyond administering justice and case management. He emphasized the importance of institutional development, infrastructure improvement, and fostering a work environment that instills dignity and belonging among all stakeholders. “A court is not merely a building made of bricks, stone, and concrete. It is a sanctuary where citizens bring their hopes, grievances, and trust in the rule of law,” he stated.
Strengthening the Bar and Bench Partnership
Chief Justice Sinha also addressed the crucial relationship between the bar and the bench, emphasizing their interconnectedness within the justice delivery system. “While the bench delivers judgments, the bar presents the concerns, rights, and grievances of the people. A strong, independent, and dignified bar is vital for a robust judiciary,” he remarked.
Gratitude and Reflections
Throughout his speech, Chief Justice Sinha expressed deep gratitude to various individuals who influenced his career, including Supreme Court Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra, senior counsel Gopal S. Chaturvedi, as well as family, colleagues, and staff members. He became emotional recalling his late parents and expressed thanks to the former and current judges, lawyers, and staff of the Allahabad High Court and its Lucknow bench.
Farewell Ceremony Highlights
The farewell ceremony was attended by all judges of the High Court, with Justice Sanjay K. Agarwal delivering the opening address. Advocate General Vivek Sharma, State Bar Council Chairman Ravindra Kumar Parashar, Bar Association President R.S. Baghel, and Deputy Solicitor General Ramakant Mishra were also present, along with various members of the bar and court staff.
