In a significant legal development, a Delhi court has granted bail to Satyendar Jain, a prominent leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), in a case brought by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB). The case involves alleged irregularities in the tender process for sewage treatment plant projects linked to the Delhi Jal Board (DJB).
Special Judge (PC Act) Digvinay Singh of the Rouse Avenue Courts delivered the order on Thursday, providing Jain with a reprieve from custody. Jain was initially arrested by the ACB on August 18, 2023, following accusations of irregular practices in the awarding of contracts related to DJB’s sewage treatment facilities.
The charges against Jain include alleged violations of the Prevention of Corruption Act (PC Act) as well as the Indian Penal Code (IPC). This case, which was initiated in May 2024 after a complaint by the Directorate of Vigilance, centers on allegations of manipulated tender conditions, criminal conspiracy, and potential bribery concerning the contracts for DJB’s sewage treatment plant upgrades.
Importantly, on August 19, the court had declined to rule Jain’s arrest as unlawful, underscoring the ongoing legal scrutiny of the case. The decision to grant bail marks a critical juncture in the proceedings, as Jain and his legal team continue to contest the allegations.
