Delhi Court Remands Key Suspects in Satya Niketan Building Collapse
In a significant development, a Delhi court has remanded Mahesh Gupta, the son of the Satya Niketan PG building owner, along with operator Sudhanshu and building contractor Sanoj, to police custody for two days. This decision was made by Judicial Magistrate Kautak Bhardwaj.
The court’s order follows an earlier decision on September 7, when another Magistrate court directed the building owner, Hariram Gupta, and his wife, Urmila Gupta, into judicial custody for 14 days. This legal action comes in the wake of the tragic collapse of the building near Delhi University’s South Campus on September 6. The structure, which served as a boys’ PG accommodation, crumbled during repair work, resulting in tragic fatalities among both students and workers.
High Court Steps In: Government Accountability and Public Interest Litigation
In response to the incident, a public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Delhi High Court, seeking a compensation of ₹1 crore for the families of the victims. Additionally, the PIL calls for a comprehensive structural audit of all PG accommodations and hostels in the region.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia addressed the PIL on Monday. The court firmly stated that the government cannot evade responsibility for the catastrophe. It has instructed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to initiate a high-level inquiry to determine whether the collapsed building had proper construction permits. Furthermore, the court emphasized that accountability must be established among officials responsible for any negligence, and it demanded updates on actions against those found culpable.
Supreme Court Considers Broader Safety Evaluation
Notably, the Supreme Court has also taken cognizance of the incident. On September 8, it indicated plans to evaluate building safety concerns on a national scale, prompted by the Satya Niketan tragedy. This move underscores the critical need for stringent safety standards and regulatory oversight across the country.
