The Delhi High Court has granted bail to a lawyer who faced charges of raping a 27-year-old colleague and allegedly attempting to manipulate her through two judicial officers. Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani sanctioned the bail request, imposing specific conditions that the accused must adhere to. The comprehensive order detailing these conditions is expected to be released soon.
The 51-year-old accused lawyer sought bail from the court, citing a settlement reached with the complainant. This case garnered significant attention when the Delhi High Court administratively suspended judicial officer Sanjeev Kumar Singh and initiated disciplinary proceedings against him and another district court judge. These actions were taken following allegations that the judicial officers pressured the complainant to withdraw her case against the accused lawyer.
The complainant initially filed a First Information Report (FIR) in June 2025 at Neb Sarai Police Station. The report accused the lawyer of rape, criminal intimidation, and assault. The woman claimed that the accused, a widower, coerced her into sexual relations over a five-year period under the guise of marriage promises, and that she became pregnant earlier this year. The prosecution asserts that the accused accompanied her to a hospital for an abortion and subsequently assaulted her at a South Delhi country club. CCTV footage reportedly captured segments of this confrontation.
The defense team for the accused-lawyer included eminent Senior Advocates Salman Khurshid, Sacchin Puri, and Abhimanyu Bhandari, along with advocates Nattasha Garg, Azra Rehman, Anubhav Dubey, Naren Rajput, Ashwani Kumar, Akash Gehlot, and Sunil Kumar. Representing the State, Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) Richa Dhawan appeared in court.
