Delhi High Court to Address Allegations of Police Excesses
In a significant legal development, two public interest litigations (PILs) have been filed with the Delhi High Court concerning alleged police misconduct against protesters at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi. The petitions were presented on Wednesday before a judicial bench comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia, seeking urgent intervention.
The petitioners’ counsel articulated the gravity of the situation by stating, “This incident has shaken the conscience of the nation.” In response, the court agreed to expedite the hearing, scheduling it for the same day. A similar request for urgent listing was made on Tuesday as well.
Protests Led by CJP and Nationwide Student Activists
The protests, orchestrated by students from across India and members of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)—an online satirical group—are aimed at demanding accountability for repeated examination paper leaks. The demonstrators are also calling for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
On Monday, the protesters attempted to march towards the Parliament House; however, the Delhi Police intervened, resulting in clashes. Reports indicate that the police employed lathi charges and tear gas, leading to several protester injuries.
Political Leaders Also Detained
The situation escalated further when Congress party leaders, including the Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, staged a demonstration in front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence on Tuesday. The leaders were detained, and Rahul Gandhi reportedly sustained minor injuries during the ensuing scuffle.
