Delhi Police Apprehend Law Students Over Disruptive Conduct in Supreme Court

Delhi Police have detained two law students from Lucknow University following a disturbance during a Supreme Court hearing where one of the students allegedly used abusive language towards judges. The individuals involved have been identified as Prabal Pratap Singh, 24, and Chander Bhan, 23, who are respectively in their third and second years of study at the university.

Details of the Incident

The incident, which occurred on July 10, took place before a bench comprising Justices KV Viswanathan and Alok Aradhe. A case has since been registered at the Tilak Marg police station based on a statement from the Supreme Court’s security staff. The charges involve disrupting court proceedings as well as obstructing the duties of court personnel who attempted to manage the situation.

Disruption During the Hearing

During the proceedings, Prabal Pratap Singh, acting as a petitioner-in-person, allegedly disrupted the hearing by using foul language and throwing his case files within the courtroom. His actions were seen as obstructive to the court’s functioning. Despite the disruption, the court’s order dated July 10 indicated that it did not intend to pursue further action against him at that time.

A Challenging Hearing

Pratap was present in the Supreme Court challenging an April 2026 decision made by the Allahabad High Court. Rather than presenting legal arguments, he addressed the bench in an unconventional manner, demanding, “Mr judicial servant, I order you to order the registration of an FIR against the Assistant Commissioner of Police of Lucknow.” Justice Viswanathan responded to this unexpected command by questioning, “You are ordering me? You are ordering us?” Pratap concluded his statement by asserting, “That is all from my side. Everything is on record.”

Escalation and Ejection from Court

The situation quickly escalated as Pratap resorted to throwing papers and shouting abuses in the courtroom. He continued his tirade even as security personnel escorted him out, directing further verbal attacks towards the Chief Justice of India. Concerning the substantive issues of the case, the court found no grounds to overturn the Allahabad High Court’s ruling.
