Jigar Shah Appointed as General Counsel of HDFC Bank
HDFC Bank has officially announced the appointment of Jigar Shah, previously a Managing Director at KKR & Co Inc, as its new General Counsel. The bank disclosed this significant development to stock exchanges on June 29, 2026. Shah will initially take on the role of General Counsel-Designate starting August 20, 2026, and will fully assume the position of General Counsel from October 1, 2026.
The decision to appoint Shah was made by HDFC Bank’s Board of Directors, following recommendations from its Governance, Nomination, and Remuneration Committee. As part of the senior management team, Shah will play a crucial role in guiding the bank’s legal and regulatory strategies.
Shah’s Distinguished Career in Legal and Financial Services
Jigar Shah brings with him over 30 years of extensive experience in legal, compliance, governance, and regulatory affairs within the banking and financial services industry. His previous role involved leading complex asset workout, restructuring, and recovery tasks at Elmcroft Consulting Services, a prominent non-banking financial company.
Prior to his time at Elmcroft, Shah held the position of Managing Director and Head of Legal and Compliance at KKR India, where he was also part of the India Leadership Team. In addition, he served as a Whole-Time Executive Director and Business Leader for KKR India Financial Services.
Before joining KKR, Shah was the Managing Director and Head of Legal for India at JPMorgan Chase Bank. His career also includes significant legal leadership roles at Deutsche Bank, where he worked across India, Hong Kong, and London.
Legal Expertise and Professional Recognition
Jigar Shah’s legal journey began in the United Kingdom, where he worked with leading international law firms before transitioning into the financial services sector. He holds an LLB (Hons.) degree from the University of Leicester and completed his Law Society Finals at The College of Law, Guildford. Shah is admitted as a Solicitor in England and Wales.
HDFC Bank highlighted Shah’s recognition as one of India’s leading in-house legal professionals. His contributions have been instrumental in various industry and regulatory initiatives, further solidifying his position as a distinguished figure in the legal domain.
