Central Approval for New Chief Justice of Bombay High Court
The Indian government has officially sanctioned the appointment of Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi from the Allahabad High Court as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. This decision was confirmed on Saturday, marking a significant transition in the leadership of the court.
Justice Tripathi’s Judicial Journey
Justice Tripathi’s legal career has been both extensive and distinguished. A graduate from Lucknow University in 1990, he joined the bar as an advocate on January 11, 1992. His legal expertise predominantly lies in civil law. Over the years, he has held pivotal roles, including serving as the Additional Chief Standing Counsel for the State of Uttar Pradesh beginning in October 2007.
Significant Contributions to the Legal Field
In his legal practice, Justice Tripathi has represented various notable entities such as the Kanpur Development Authority, Kanpur Nagar Nigam, UP Food and Essential Commodities Corporation, Agra Development Authority, Moradabad Development Authority, and Kumaun University. His dedication to the legal profession was recognized with his elevation to the position of Additional Judge of the Allahabad High Court on September 27, 2013. Subsequently, he was appointed as a permanent judge on April 10, 2015.
Supreme Court Collegium’s Recommendation
The Supreme Court Collegium put forth Justice Tripathi’s name for the chief justice position during their meeting on August 6. This endorsement underscores his competence and the trust placed in his judicial capabilities.
Current Status of the Bombay High Court
Upon taking office, Justice Tripathi will become the 50th Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, and notably, only the second to come from the Allahabad High Court. The Bombay High Court is currently operating with 74 judges, which is below its approved capacity of 94 judges. This new appointment is a step towards addressing the high court’s staffing needs.
