Incident Overview
In a shocking incident that unfolded in Kerala, the parents of two lawyers were brutally attacked by a litigant. This violent act was reportedly in retaliation for the legal representation these lawyers provided to the litigant’s wife in an ongoing case. The incident took place on Thursday night and has raised serious concerns about the safety of legal professionals in the region.
Details of the Attack
According to the police’s First Information Report (FIR), the attack on the elderly couple was carried out by two men. The lawyers’ 79-year-old mother, who is currently receiving medical treatment following the attack, filed a complaint from the hospital. Her husband, aged 80, sustained severe injuries after being repeatedly stabbed and is currently in critical condition.
The advocates in question were representing the wife of one of the attackers. She had approached them seeking legal protection from her husband amid a domestic dispute. As detailed in the FIR, around 5:30 PM on August 13, the attackers, including the enraged litigant, forcibly entered the residence of the lawyers’ parents. Armed with knives, they threatened to kill both the lawyers and their parents if they did not reveal the whereabouts of their son.
Legal Proceedings
The situation escalated when the attackers disregarded pleas to leave and viciously dragged the father outside the house. In a horrifying turn of events, they attempted to slit his throat and repeatedly stabbed him in the torso. Following the mother’s courageous statement to the police, the Ernakulam Rural Police (Njarakkal) promptly registered an FIR against the assailants. The charges include violations of Sections 109(1) (attempt to murder), 118(1) (voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous weapons), 351(3) (aggravated criminal intimidation), 333 (house trespass after preparation for assault), and 3(5) (criminal act done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Community Reaction
The Kerala High Court Advocates’ Association (KHCAA) has responded swiftly to this alarming incident by organizing an urgent General Body meeting. The meeting, scheduled for 1:05 PM today in the Association Hall, aims to address the safety concerns of legal practitioners and discuss necessary measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
This attack highlights the risks faced by lawyers in the line of duty and underscores the need for heightened security measures to protect legal professionals from retaliatory violence.
