Rajasthan High Court’s Leadership Controversy
In a recent development at the Rajasthan High Court, Acting Chief Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma has firmly refuted allegations made by Supreme Court Justice Sandeep Mehta. Justice Mehta had accused him of manipulating case listings and misusing administrative powers, which he communicated through letters to the Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant. He also called for the appointment of a Chief Justice from another state to oversee the Rajasthan High Court.
Justice Sharma’s Response
Breaking his silence on the issue, Justice Sharma has issued a statement to clarify his position. He categorically denied the accusations, describing them as unfounded and stemming from what he perceives as personal resentment on the part of Justice Mehta. In his statement, penned in Hindi, he asserted, “In light of the recent developments circulating in the media and on social media, I wish to clarify that I refute all these allegations. All the allegations are baseless and have been made by the Hon’ble Judge out of resentment.”
Commitment to Judicial Integrity
Justice Sharma expressed his confidence in the integrity of the Indian judicial system. He stated that he has provided a detailed explanation of his position to Chief Justice Surya Kant, supported by evidence. He appealed to the media and members of the Bar to maintain restraint and uphold the principles of justice while awaiting a decision from the Chief Justice of India. “I earnestly appeal to the media, my fellow members of the Bar and others to uphold the principles of justice and exercise patience until the Chief Justice of India (CJI) delivers a decision. I have full faith in the Indian judicial system. Once the appropriate time arrives and I receive approval from the CJI, I will personally appear before the media to present my side; until then, I request everyone to remain patient,” he stated.
Pending Resolution and Future Developments
The controversy has sparked protests from lawyers demanding Justice Sharma’s removal from his acting position. The Supreme Court Collegium has responded by recommending Justice Sanjay K Agarwal for the role of Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court. Amidst this turmoil, the media reported that the Collegium is examining the validity of Justice Mehta’s accusations and assured that Justice Sharma would be given an opportunity to respond before any conclusions are drawn.
Following the protests, Justice Sharma has announced that he will refrain from holding court from September 1 to September 5. His retirement is imminent, scheduled for September 26, adding another layer of complexity to the unfolding situation.
