The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has announced a substantial reduction in the “other fees” charged by the Indian Law Society (ILS) Law College for the academic years 2022-23 through 2024-25. The revised fee structure sets these charges at ₹2,714 for 2022-23, ₹4,031 for 2023-24, and ₹3,342 for 2024-25. These adjustments represent a nearly 90% decrease from the approximately ₹37,000 previously levied by the college under this category.
This decision was made upon the recommendations of SPPU’s Fee Fixation Committee (FFC) and subsequently ratified by the Vice-Chancellor on behalf of the Academic Council. The reduced fees cover various categories, including moot court, seminars, cultural activities, training and placement, and resources for the library and e-learning, all in addition to existing fees established by SPPU in 2020.
ILS Law College submitted a proposal in February 2024 seeking approval for fees for the 2022-2025 period. The proposal remained unresolved for over three years, until a directive from the Bombay High Court accelerated its resolution. This judicial intervention came as part of ILS’s legal challenge against SPPU’s decision to reduce the college’s “other fees” by 88% for the 2026-27 academic year. The court not only ordered a fresh proposal for 2026-27 be submitted by ILS within two weeks but also mandated that SPPU decide on it within four weeks of receipt.
The court’s decision came after finding that SPPU had inappropriately utilized the pending 2022-2025 proposal to set fees for 2026-27, despite no such proposal being filed by the college for that year. The FFC’s preliminary recommendation for 2026-27 had suggested reducing ILS’s “other fees” from ₹36,460 to ₹4,340 per student, with several fee categories being eliminated and others significantly reduced. When combined with tuition fees, this would have brought the college’s total annual charges down by 77%, from ₹41,635 in 2024-25 to approximately ₹9,515.
However, the Bombay High Court issued a stay on this proposed figure on June 29, not based on the merits of the fee reduction but because the only proposal on record from ILS, filed in February 2024, covered fees for the 2022-23 to 2024-25 period, and not for 2026-27.
