Udhayanidhi Stalin Set for Release: Tamil Nadu Government Updates Madras High Court

The Tamil Nadu government has announced that Udhayanidhi Stalin, a prominent leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and former Deputy Chief Minister, will be released from police custody today. This update was conveyed to the Madras High Court on Tuesday afternoon.

Stalin was detained this morning in connection with a case involving remarks made about actress Trisha. The Advocate General of Tamil Nadu, Vijay Narayan, informed the Court that the State did not intend to keep Stalin detained longer than necessary, emphasizing that the detention was conducted solely in the interest of women’s safety.

“He will be let out today itself on station bail,” assured Advocate General Narayan to Justice GK Ilanthiraiyan during the court proceedings. This assurance came as the Court was considering an anticipatory bail plea filed by Stalin following his controversial comments at a rally in Thanjavur related to the Cauvery water issue.

During the rally, when a segment of the audience chanted “Trisha Trisha,” Stalin reportedly responded with remarks that were deemed inappropriate and suggestive. This incident drew criticism from the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and other opposition parties, leading to demands for accountability and action.

As a result, a formal complaint was lodged by TVK in Thanjavur, which culminated in the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) against Stalin. The charges cited include violations under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Information Technology Act, and the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act.

Anticipating legal repercussions, Stalin filed for anticipatory bail in the High Court. However, before the plea could be addressed, he was detained by the police on Tuesday morning.
