Supreme Court Expands to 37 Judges with New Appointments

In a significant development for the Indian judiciary, the Supreme Court’s bench strength increased from 32 to 37 on Tuesday, following the swearing-in of five newly appointed judges. Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant administered the oath of office to Justices Sheel Nagu, Shree Chandrashekhar, Sanjeev Sachdeva, Arun Palli, and V Mohana.

These appointments follow a recent ordinance by the government that increased the sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court from 34 to 38. Justice Sheel Nagu, Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, and Justice Arun Palli were all serving as Chief Justices in various High Courts prior to their elevation. Meanwhile, V Mohana, a Senior Advocate, made a notable transition directly from the bar to the bench, underscoring her distinguished legal career.

The Supreme Court Collegium, led by CJI Surya Kant, recommended these appointments last week. The recommendations received clearance from the Central government on June 1, enabling these seasoned legal professionals to take on their new roles.

This expansion in the number of judges is expected to enhance the efficiency of the Supreme Court in managing its caseload. The move also reflects the ongoing efforts to address the significant backlog of cases that have been a challenge for the Indian judicial system.

Spotlight: Justice V Mohana

Justice V Mohana’s elevation from the bar to the bench is particularly noteworthy. As a Senior Advocate, she has earned a reputation for her adept handling of complex legal issues and her contributions to the legal community. Her appointment is seen as a testament to her expertise and dedication to the field of law.

These new appointments mark a pivotal moment for the Supreme Court, as it continues to adapt to the evolving demands of the Indian legal landscape. With the expanded bench, the Supreme Court is better positioned to deliver timely and effective justice.
