BCI Takes Action Against Samarth Singh Amid Serious Allegations
The Bar Council of India (BCI) has taken decisive action by suspending the legal practice license of advocate Samarth Singh. This decision comes in light of serious allegations surrounding the death of his wife, Twisha Sharma. The interim suspension was issued by BCI Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra, pending further review by the Council’s disciplinary body.
FIR and Allegations of Dowry Harassment
An FIR has been filed against Singh and others, citing allegations such as dowry death and cruelty. Reports indicate that Singh is evading authorities and has not been cooperating with the investigation. The BCI underscored the urgency of acting to maintain the legal profession’s integrity.
BCI Statement on Professional Conduct
In its order, the BCI stated, “The allegations are grave and have a direct bearing upon the dignity, discipline, and public image of the legal profession. An advocate is not merely a private individual but an officer of the Court and a member of a regulated profession. The Bar Council of India is under a statutory duty to preserve the purity of the profession and to ensure that the conduct of advocates does not erode public confidence in the administration of justice.”
Extent of the Suspension
During the suspension period, Singh is prohibited from participating in any legal proceedings or filing documents in courts, tribunals, or authorities across India. The case will be reviewed by the appropriate disciplinary committee to determine further actions following due process.
Ongoing Legal Proceedings
This development occurs amidst ongoing legal proceedings in the Madhya Pradesh High Court related to Sharma’s death. Twisha Sharma, a former Miss Pune, had married Samarth Singh, a lawyer based in Bhopal, five months ago after meeting through a dating app. She recently passed away, prompting an investigation by the Katara Hills police.
Further Allegations and Legal Actions
Media reports suggest that both Sharma’s husband and her mother-in-law, Giribala Singh, have been accused of dowry harassment. Giribala Singh, a retired district judge, currently serves as President of the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. Sharma’s family has accused her in-laws of ongoing domestic violence and harassment, demanding a second post-mortem to determine Sharma’s exact cause of death. The Madhya Pradesh High Court granted this request on Friday.
Denial of Bail
In related legal proceedings, a sessions court denied the anticipatory bail plea filed by Samarth Singh, further compounding the legal challenges he faces.
