Senior Advocate Billwadal Bhattacharya has been appointed as an Additional Advocate General (AAG) for the state of West Bengal, marking the second such appointment within the week. Previously, Senior Advocate Rajdeep Mazumder held the position of Additional Advocate General. These appointments coincide with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) assuming power in the state.
Bhattacharya’s legal career includes a significant milestone when he was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Calcutta High Court in November 2024. His designation came after a Full Court meeting on November 21, 2024, which recognized 81 advocates as Senior Advocates.
Prior to this, Bhattacharya served as the Deputy Solicitor General of India for the Calcutta High Court until 2024. During his tenure, he notably represented the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in multiple cases, including those related to the West Bengal teacher recruitment scam.
Bhattacharya’s legal acumen has been evident in numerous politically significant cases within West Bengal. Notably, he represented Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition, in proceedings before the Calcutta High Court. The case involved the controversial entry of security personnel into the West Bengal Assembly premises, where Bhattacharya argued against the suspension of constitutional provisions via an administrative letter from the Speaker’s office.
In related legal appointments, Senior Advocates Nilanjan Bhattacharyya and Dibyendra Narayan Ray were named as Senior Standing Counsel and Government Pleader, respectively.
