A Pune special court has swiftly delivered a verdict in the case involving the tragic rape and murder of a three-year-old girl, convicting 65-year-old Bhimrao Kamble. The decision, handed down on June 25, came just two months after the abhorrent crime was committed, showcasing the judicial system’s commitment to speedy justice.
Presiding over the case, Special Judge S R Salunkhe found Kamble guilty on all counts under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The case was resolved expeditiously, concluding within 55 days from the date of the crime, with the sentencing scheduled for June 29.
Special Public Prosecutor Ajay Misar, representing the State, together with the victim’s father, has advocated for the imposition of the death penalty, arguing that such a punishment is essential to deter future offenses of a similar nature.
The heinous crime occurred on May 1, when Kamble reportedly lured the young victim away from a temple under false pretenses, promising snacks and a chance to see a newborn calf. At the time, the child was visiting her grandmother.
The prosecution presented a compelling case, built upon a robust chain of evidence. This included CCTV footage capturing Kamble escorting the girl, DNA analysis, forensic reports, a detailed post-mortem examination, and testimonies from an extensive list of 82 witnesses. A comprehensive chargesheet, consisting of approximately 1,100 pages, was submitted just 14 days post-incident.
In response to the gravity of the case, the Bombay High Court mandated in-camera hearings to ensure the trial proceeded without undue delay, emphasizing the importance of timely justice in such sensitive matters.
