In a historic move for Fountain Court Chambers, Sian Huckett has been appointed as the next Senior Clerk, marking her as the first woman to hold this prestigious position at the renowned London-based commercial barristers’ chambers. The transition will take effect on January 1, 2027.
Huckett’s appointment is a groundbreaking moment, as she becomes the first female Senior Clerk among the Bar’s elite ‘Magic Circle’ of commercial chambers, which includes Fountain Court, Brick Court, Essex Court, and One Essex Court Chambers.
Huckett will succeed Alex Taylor, who has been at the helm of the clerking team since 2008. Taylor will remain connected to the chambers, taking on a part-time consultancy role after nearly two decades of leadership. During his tenure, the chambers earned multiple accolades, including being named Set of the Year at the 2025 Chambers & Partners UK Bar Awards.
Reflecting on his years of service, Taylor expressed gratitude for the support from his colleagues and members of the chamber. “It has been an honor and a privilege to be the Senior Clerk at Fountain Court, a role at the pinnacle of clerking,” said Taylor. He acknowledged the support of colleagues such as Julie Parker, Caroline McConnon, and Sian Huckett, along with the talented members of the chamber.
Alongside Huckett’s promotion, Luke Diebelius and Alfie Harper have been named Deputy Senior Clerks, forming a new leadership team poised to guide Fountain Court into the future.
Huckett, who began her clerking career in 2005 and joined Fountain Court in October 2008, became Deputy Senior Clerk in 2018. Her role has been pivotal in managing client relationships and overseeing the allocation of new instructions. She has also been active in promoting equality and diversity within the profession, serving on Fountain Court’s committees and the Institute of Barristers’ Clerks’ Management Committee.
In 2023, Huckett was recognized as Clerk of the Year at the Legal 500 Bar Awards, a testament to her exceptional contributions to the field.
Upon her appointment, Huckett expressed her commitment to maintaining the high standards of Fountain Court. “It is a real honor to be appointed Senior Clerk at Fountain Court and to lead such an exceptional clerking team. Our reputation is built on the quality of our people, relationships, and service, and those will remain central to everything we do,” she stated.
Richard Handyside KC, the Head of Chambers, praised the clerking team’s longstanding contribution to the chambers’ success. “The quality of our clerking team has long been central to Fountain Court’s strength and the service we provide to clients,” Handyside remarked. He emphasized the trust and excellence demonstrated by Sian, Alfie, and Luke in their roles.
With this new leadership, Fountain Court Chambers continues to uphold its tradition of excellence while embracing diversity and innovation in the legal profession.
