Supreme Court Collegium’s Recommendation
The Supreme Court Collegium has put forward a significant recommendation concerning the judiciary of Madhya Pradesh. In a meeting held on August 31, the Collegium proposed Justice Alpesh Yeshvant Kogje for the prominent role of Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
Justice Kogje’s Professional Background
Justice Kogje, currently serving as a judge at the Gujarat High Court, boasts an extensive legal career. His educational journey began with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in 1990, followed by a law degree from the Faculty of Law at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in 1993.
After his admission to the Bar in 1993, Justice Kogje engaged in a distinguished practice focusing on civil and criminal law. His career highlights include serving as Additional Public Prosecutor from 2002 to 2007 and as Standing Counsel for the Central Excise and Customs Department. Notably, he was also the Special Public Prosecutor for the Special Investigation Team (SIT), handling pivotal cases related to the 2002 Godhra riots.
Judicial Tenure and Elevation
Justice Kogje’s judicial journey advanced with his elevation to an Additional Judge of the Gujarat High Court in April 2016. His competence and dedication were further acknowledged when he became a permanent Judge of the same court in March 2018.
The Current Scenario at Madhya Pradesh High Court
The Madhya Pradesh High Court, currently operating with 38 judges against a sanctioned strength of 53, anticipates Justice Kogje’s appointment to bolster its judicial efficacy. The Collegium’s recommendation is a step forward in addressing the judge shortage and enhancing the court’s functionality.
