The Supreme Court Collegium has put forth a significant recommendation for the Bombay High Court. In a meeting convened on August 6, the Collegium proposed the elevation of Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi of the Allahabad High Court to serve as the next Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. This nomination awaits confirmation from the Central government.
Upon approval, Justice Tripathi will become the 38th Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court and notably, the second Chief Justice to hail from the Allahabad region. Justice Tripathi’s legal journey commenced with a law degree from Lucknow University in 1990. He was admitted to the bar on January 11, 1992, where he primarily focused on civil law.
Justice Tripathi’s career features notable positions, including serving as the additional chief standing counsel for the State of Uttar Pradesh starting in October 2007. Throughout his practice, he represented various governmental and development authorities such as the Kanpur Development Authority, Kanpur Nagar Nigam, UP Food and Essential Commodities Corporation, Agra Development Authority, Moradabad Development Authority, and Kumaun University.
His judicial career advanced when he was appointed as an additional judge of the Allahabad High Court on September 27, 2013, and subsequently achieved the status of permanent judge on April 10, 2015. Justice Tripathi currently holds the position of the second senior-most judge at the Allahabad High Court, where he has presided over the principal bench.
Presently, the acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court is Justice Ravindra Ghuge. He, too, is in line for elevation, having been recommended to become the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.
