The Supreme Court Collegium has proposed Justice Ravindra V Ghuge of the Bombay High Court for the esteemed position of Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court. This recommendation was formalized during the Collegium’s meeting on August 6. Justice Ghuge is currently serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.
Justice Ghuge’s legal journey began with his education at MP Law College in Aurangabad, where he completed his law degree in 1990. His career in law commenced in the same year when he joined the Bar and began practicing before the Bombay High Court, as well as Industrial and Labour Courts. Early in his career, he represented workers and unions in approximately 2,000 cases. His expertise and legal acumen subsequently led him to advocate for about 250 industries, including several multinational corporations and large private enterprises.
In 2013, Justice Ghuge was elevated to the position of a judge at the Bombay High Court. Earlier this year, he was appointed as the Acting Chief Justice following the elevation of then Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar to the Supreme Court in June.
The Calcutta High Court is currently staffed with 41 judges, although its sanctioned capacity is 72. This recommendation comes at a crucial time for the Court, which seeks to address its current shortage of judges. [Read the Collegium Statement]
