The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) has announced the appointment of Mihir Rale, a Partner at Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, as the Chair of its Legal Tech Committee. Joining him is Dibyajyoti Das, Head of Legal & Compliance at Experian India, who will serve as Co-Chair. This committee serves as a groundbreaking platform designed to foster engagement, knowledge exchange, and collaboration among General Counsels, law firms, and providers of legal technology solutions.
The establishment of the Legal Tech Committee comes at a pivotal moment as India’s digital economy undergoes rapid transformation. Businesses are increasingly required to navigate a complex landscape of laws, regulations, and compliance mandates. As technology becomes integral to traditional sectors, there is a recognition that not every new business model or emerging risk necessitates the introduction of new laws or additional compliance layers.
Functioning as IAMAI’s permanent panel of legal experts, the Legal Tech Committee brings together general counsels, law firms, and legal tech enterprises. It also acts as a legal advisory resource for IAMAI’s other sectoral committees that require regulatory or legal insights. The Committee is tasked with identifying areas where laws overlap, creating uncertainty or unnecessary compliance. Its focus is on streamlining regulations to make them more effective for the digital economy in India.
Mihir Rale, the newly appointed Chair, commented on the initiative, stating, “As India’s growth increasingly relies on the advancement of the digital economy, the challenge isn’t merely to increase regulation, but to ensure that the regulations in place are effective. We need a framework that simultaneously encourages innovation, safeguards consumers, and addresses genuine risks, without imposing unnecessary or overlapping regulatory demands. Through this Committee, we aim to integrate the expertise of legal practitioners into discussions to advocate for laws that align with these goals.”
