The Singapore Corporate Counsel Association (SCCA) and the General Counsels’ Association of India (GCAI) have entered into a significant partnership aimed at bolstering the legal relationship between Singapore and India. This collaboration was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed on August 28 during the “India-Singapore Legal Bridge” event, which ran concurrently with the Singapore Convention Week.

The event was a convergence of legal and business leaders who deliberated on the investment landscape within India, Singapore, and the ASEAN region. Notable attendees included Supreme Court Justice Manmohan, Attorney General for India R Venkataramani, Deputy High Commissioner of India in Singapore Sudhi Chowdhary, and Drew & Napier Chairman Jimmy Yim. The discussions centered on the pivotal role of the legal sector in facilitating cross-border growth and investment.
Objectives of the MOU
The MOU seeks to enhance knowledge sharing, professional growth, and cross-border engagement among in-house legal professionals from both countries. A notable initiative under this agreement is a cross-border immersion program developed by SCCA Academy and GCAI. This program is designed to equip students with practical knowledge of in-house legal practice, covering areas such as legal technology, artificial intelligence, negotiation, and forensic investigations. It will involve seasoned in-house counsel and industry experts, providing invaluable insights into modern legal challenges.
Professional Standards and Alignment
Beyond educational initiatives, the SCCA and GCAI partnership aims to elevate and align professional standards for in-house counsel across both jurisdictions. This effort is expected to create a more cohesive and integrated legal ecosystem that supports businesses in navigating cross-border opportunities.

SCCA President Daniel Choo emphasized the potential of this partnership in uniting the in-house legal communities of both nations. He stated, “Singapore and India share deep and longstanding ties, and we believe there is tremendous potential in bringing our in-house legal communities even closer together. We are grateful to GCAI for their partnership and, importantly, for sharing our belief in the power of collaboration to strengthen and advance the in-house legal profession.”
Choo further highlighted the importance of preparing legal professionals for the evolving landscape shaped by technology, regulation, and new business models. “Ultimately, we hope to give the next generation of legal talent greater exposure to the realities of in-house legal practice, while ensuring that today’s practitioners continue to evolve alongside the businesses they serve,” he added.
GCAI Co-founder Sanjeev Gemawat described the MOU as a “historic beginning” for the legal communities of India and Singapore. He remarked, “Through closer institutional collaboration, we have an opportunity to help build a stronger and more integrated legal ecosystem across India, Singapore, and the wider region—one that enables businesses to invest with confidence, navigate cross-border opportunities, and resolve disputes effectively.”
Co-founder Akhil Prasad also expressed optimism about the partnership’s potential to prepare young lawyers for complex international business environments. “Economic growth and the increasing complexity of cross-border business will require a new generation of lawyers equipped with skills that go far beyond traditional legal education,” he noted.
