Singapore’s Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon to Retire in 2027
After dedicating over 14 years to leading Singapore’s judiciary, Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon is set to retire on February 26, 2027. This announcement was made by the Singapore judiciary on July 17, marking the end of an era characterized by significant developments in the country’s legal landscape.
Justice Sushil Nair to Succeed as Chief Justice
Justice Sushil Sukumaran Nair, currently serving as a Justice of the Court of Appeal, has been named as Menon’s successor. His appointment follows a rapid ascent through the judiciary, having been elevated to the Court of Appeal as recently as June 15, 2026.
A Legacy of Innovation and Reform
Chief Justice Menon, notable for being Singapore’s first locally born Chief Justice, took office on November 6, 2012, at the age of 50. His career has been marked by numerous achievements, including his role in establishing the Singapore International Commercial Court (SICC), which has bolstered Singapore’s reputation as a hub for international commercial dispute resolution.
Menon’s tenure also witnessed the creation of the Appellate Division of the High Court and the Singapore Judicial College. He has been instrumental in leading the judiciary’s digital transformation and implementing measures to enhance access to justice.
During his time as Chief Justice, Menon presided over landmark cases involving Singapore’s online falsehoods law, the contentious Section 377A criminalizing sex between men, and rulings on the death penalty. Reflecting on his tenure, Menon remarked, “I have given it my best. The time is coming when I will pass this responsibility on.”

Justice Sushil Nair’s promotion to the role of Chief Justice comes less than two years after he joined the Bench as a judicial commissioner on April 1, 2025.
