Tanu Banerjee Appointed Chief Legal Officer at Jio Studios

In a strategic move, Jio Studios has appointed Tanu Banerjee as its Chief Legal Officer, marking a significant transition for the accomplished legal professional from her previous role as a partner at Khaitan & Co. Banerjee shared this development on LinkedIn, noting her official commencement at Jio Studios last week, subsequent to a five-and-a-half-year tenure at the legal powerhouse, Khaitan & Co.

During her time at Khaitan & Co, Banerjee held the position of Partner, specializing in the Corporate & Commercial and Technology, Media, and Telecom (TMT) sectors. Notably, she led the firm’s media and entertainment practice from its Mumbai office. Her expertise was recognized by Legal 500, which acknowledged her as one of the practice heads for Khaitan & Co’s TMT team.

Banerjee’s legal acumen spans a variety of domains, including media, technology, entertainment, and general corporate law. She has provided legal guidance to a plethora of clients including OTT platforms, digital media ventures, technology companies, production houses, and filmmakers. Her advisory roles have covered a wide array of transactions and commercial arrangements such as media and technology mergers and acquisitions, content licensing, rights acquisition, film financing, original productions, technology collaborations, and talent engagements.

In addition to her expertise in media and entertainment law, Banerjee has also offered counsel on joint ventures, corporate restructuring, business transfers, and commercial contracts, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory frameworks in India. Her roster of clients at Khaitan & Co notably included Reliance Jio and Jio Studios, where she provided advice on regulatory issues concerning digital media platforms and media acquisitions.

Prior to her tenure at Khaitan & Co, Banerjee served as a Partner at IndusLaw in Bengaluru for nearly four years. Her earlier career included roles as a Senior Associate at both Wadia Ghandy & Co and DSK Legal. Banerjee’s journey in the legal field began as a legal counsel at Reliance ADAG, where she worked from 2008 to 2010.
