Telangana Advocates Protection Act Enacted

As of June 2, 2026, the Telangana Advocates Protection Act, 2026 is officially in effect following a notification from the state government. This landmark legislation is designed to offer enhanced protection to legal professionals against violence, harassment, and unjust legal accusations. The notification, issued by the Law Department on the same date, declares, “In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (3) of section 1 of the Telangana Advocates Protection Act, 2026, Government hereby appoint the 2nd day of June, 2026, as the date on which the provisions of the said Act, shall come into force.”

Legislative Background and Objectives

Earlier this year, the Telangana Legislative Assembly passed this Act to address the growing concerns within the legal community regarding safety and professional security. The Act is a response to increasing incidents where advocates have faced threats and violence. It includes provisions for police protection, safeguards against false allegations, and establishes a dedicated grievance redressal mechanism.

This legal framework is a result of extensive consultations, including resolutions from the Bar Council of Telangana and contributions from High Court bar associations, legal forums, and other stakeholders within the legal profession. It signifies a collective agreement on the necessity of protective measures for legal practitioners.

Duddilla Sridhar Babu, Telangana’s Minister for Information Technology, Electronics and Communication, Industry and Commerce, and Legislative Affairs, emphasized the importance of this Act. He stated that the legislation aims to ensure the professional safety and security of advocates, thereby enhancing their confidence in fulfilling their duties. “This law is crucial for bolstering the trust of legal professionals in their ability to perform their roles without fear,” he remarked.

Bar associations nationwide have long advocated for similar protective measures, noting the frequent attacks on lawyers both within court premises and in public. The enactment of the Telangana Advocates Protection Act is seen as a significant step towards addressing these longstanding issues and could potentially serve as a model for other states.
