Delhi High Court Issues Notices in Salman Khan's Plea Against 'Kala Hiran'

The Delhi High Court has taken a significant step in the legal proceedings concerning the film Kala Hiran: The Battle for Legacy, following a plea from Bollywood actor Salman Khan. On Friday, the court issued notices to the film’s director and producer, marking the latest development in Khan’s efforts to prevent the film’s release.

Justice Neena Bansal Krishna, presiding over the vacation bench, ordered the issuance of notices and scheduled the next hearing for June 19. According to the court’s statement, “This application has been filed for the impleadment of Amit Jani, Jani FireFox Films, Bharat Shrinate, and Akshay Pandey. Let notice be issued. An application under Order 39, Rule 1 and 2 has also been filed for stay on release of the film Kala Hiran: Battle for Legacy. The trailer has been released today even though it was supposed to be released on 20 June. List on June 19.”

Salman Khan’s application forms part of an ongoing lawsuit aimed at safeguarding his personality rights. The court had previously issued an interim order in Khan’s favor, protecting these rights. The recent application names Amit Jani, Jani FireFox Films, Bharat Shrinate, and Akshay Pandey, along with certain unnamed individuals, as defendants.

Khan’s objections to Kala Hiran rest on its portrayal of him with alleged underworld connections. He contends that the film’s promotional poster, which was released on May 29, violates his personality rights by depicting a character closely resembling him, complete with a distinctive bracelet closely associated with the actor.

The actor further argues that the film could prejudice his right to a fair trial in the ongoing blackbuck poaching case, which is still pending before the Rajasthan High Court and the Supreme Court of India. Moreover, Khan has cited media reports and statements made during a press conference by producer Amit Jani, suggesting that the film is based on the sub judice blackbuck hunting incident.

Adding to the controversy, Khan claims that he initially issued a legal notice to the filmmakers to cease the film’s production. However, he alleges that Jani publicly destroyed the notice during an interview, which was later circulated online. Jani reportedly posted on social media platform X, alleging harassment from Khan and the underworld.

Khan’s counsel emphasized in court, “My personality rights, including my image, likeness, and all other aspects of my personality, were protected by this Court. On May 29, a poster is released with a person bearing my likeness, he is wearing the bracelet that I wear. There are 4 FIRs. In 3, I have been acquitted, and in one the appeal is pending. Every day in the press, my name is there, defamatory statements are made. I am asking for an injunction on this film. This morning, they have released the trailer.”
